RODENT CONTROL – RATS & MICE
As mammals, Rodentia to Australia are rats and mice. With two, continuously-growing incisors in the upper and lower jaws, Rodents gnaw on things such as grains as a way of keeping their teeth at a manageable length.
With a longer body, rats are easily distinguishable from mice. Typically, rats are between 15 – 20cm long. With the Black rat and the Brown rat the best-known species, rats originated from Asia where they are known as the Old World or Tru rats. The Black rat is nocturnal and omnivorous.
As the best known mouse species, the common house mouse only lives about 5 months due to heavy predation. Not unlike rats, mice can also be harmful to crops and can spread disease through their droppings and urine. They are small rodents and have small ears and pointed snouts. Their bodies are usually long with hairless, slender tails, however this can vary across the different types of mice.
Rats and mice can spread disease by contaminating food, damaging containers and packaging, wiring and buildings. They are able to spread parasites and disease to humans and other animals also.
